3 Surprising Truths When Hiring an Online Math Tutor

To find a good math tutor online you need to decide what you want the tutor to do and how much you are willing to pay. Cheapest is not always the least expensive. It's true that you get what you pay for even when looking for a new private tutor. Let's look at three surprising truths to think about when hiring an online math tutor.

high school math student, online precalculus, geometry help

If all you want are homework answers than any tutor can do that. These tutors will be very cheap. Generally there is no real discussion going on. Each problem is just worked the way the tutor can manage to get the answer. Typically these tutors are in high school or college and have no real background in math to make sure the problem is done correctly. This may be the cheapest option, but usually not a good one if you are looking to learn the material.

college math student, online precalculus topics, math help

If you want to learn one way of doing the math, then anybody that studied math in college can provide you help. These tutors will cost a little more because they have a little more study in the college setting. They can show more of how to do a problem. However, they may not be able to help you understand in a way that you learn best. So while they can do the problem, can you really understand the math concepts yourself?

But, if you want to learn quickly and get a deep understanding of math, then you should hire someone who has actually taught math before. A teacher knows many different ways of presenting material and they can quickly decide what kind of learner you are. Matching those two things will really help you understand the math so that you can do any homework and pass a test. These teachers naturally cost more per hour, but given that you will actually learn quicker, in the end the professional teacher is most economical. That may be surprising to you, but think about not only being able to do the homework yourself, you'll be able to take tests and really show that you have mastered the material.

You get what you pay for, great work ain't cheap, private tutor

The saying, “You get what you pay for,” is very true with tutors. So balance what you need from a tutor against the cost overall. There are many private tutors online. Do you just want your homework done for you? Hires a cheap tutor. Do you want to know one way of doing a problem? Look for someone in college. If you want to really master the math and be equipped to do your future math on your own, hire a professional math teacher and learn faster and with a deeper understanding.
